WHAT REALLY HAPPENED
… Well, those last logs are one way it could have happened.
But here’s what really happened:
Someone didn’t check the flour and oops we all had a little ergot. Yes, the birthday cake got infected. Plus a lot of baked goods the girls made. It was so much.
Also there was a gas leak in the underground pool connected to Rosenblum Hall. Nightmare.
Isabella was called out for a few days because Ray dared Emma to stick peanuts up her nose. She was stuck outside the school because of the weather. The chaos had already started happening when she returned.
In this version of events, the group was joined by two additions, twins Olivia and “‘Liv” Massell, both of them students at Burnbriar. They were part of everything, they got sick with ergot, and were generally in the background of all the shenanigans that occurred.
Hawke remembered her edibles and, if asked, shared them. These did not mix well with the ergot poisoning. She also managed to sneak in Varric and hid him for a whole 3 days before Dorothy found him and snitched.
Hawke found a massive dog in the snow and brought him in too. He took a liking to Satsuki and after she had a freak out in the library because of the ergot making it seem huge, he had eaten the granola crumbs she left behind. They bonded and he became known as Granola.
A couple days into their stay, Mariko sustained a concussion and, since sleeping with a concussion is bad news, had to stay awake as much as possible. During the time she experienced visual hallucinations and, being greatly fatigued by this, spent days in her room.
Misty and Sayo played the world's most intense game of Operation, which Misty won, and was so insufferable about, that she was not included in the rousing game of hide and seek played shortly after. Sayo won hide and seek every time.
Sick with ergot, Vanity let slip some previously unspoken details to Chris; the ensuing argument escalated into- calling it a fight would be charitable, given how one-sided it all was. Unsteady from pain and slightly delirious in the aftermath, Vanity managed to mistake cleaning chemicals in the kitchen for drink flavorings and creamers. She was tackled by at least five people to prevent the ensuing gas cloud and spent the next two days recovering and/or hiding her shame. Hawke took care of her the whole time.
Usagi, after being part of Team “We don’t mix bleach and ammonia”, decided she wanted cookies. She managed to make some without setting the entire kitchen on fire! Unfortunately, between the ergot flour, the gas, and an allergy to walnuts that she didn’t know she had…she wound up taking a little too much Benadryl and slept for a good week straight. Once she woke up, she called her mom and they had a long heart-to-heart talk. Usagi finally said that while she understood that her mom was looking out for her, she wasn’t happy in the US and hadn’t been since she arrived. She explained everything about having been really sick, having missed her friends and her family, and how she really just wanted to go home. To her surprise, her mother agreed.
Kana was on a bit of an insomnia spiral after the various mushrooms made her see the Pepper Man and stressing out over a job. Kohaku took matters into her own hands and gave Kana tea laced with plants meant to assist sleep. Kana then spent the next 72 hours catching up on sleep.
On a late night visit to the kitchens, Dorothy ran into Anthy, who made tea for the both of them while they had a civil chat. Due to a mixup in the kitchen, Dorothy's tea was laced with the same plants Kohaku used for Kana that same day. Dorothy dozed off in her chair. Anthy felt awkward about this, and didn't want Dorothy to complain about the state of her hair or imprints on her face, so she went to Dorothy's room to get her one of her pillows. When she tried to slip it under Dorothy's head, Dorothy jerked awake and accidentally kicked Anthy's leg, bruising her. It was otherwise a pleasant conversation.
Satsuki shared some granola with Hatsune so she received a nice smoothie in return. Except no one checked the frozen fruit and she knocked herself out with a rotten smoothie. Everyone stared at her passed out in the lounge. Chris picked her up and dumped her on Kana’s bed.
Tiera, under the effects of the hallucinations, wrote out several elaborate “investigation” reports and ended up accidentally sending them to her twin brother, Quill. He tried to head to campus to figure out what was going on, but got caught up in the gas leak and ended up somehow getting locked in the administration building with a bunch of birds. They bonded, though, and the new birds are coming home with them.
Hawke ended up having a small breakdown in her room on Christmas Eve after taking an edible and eating more of the ergot cake. Since there was wifi she ended up actually reading the text messages her mother had been sending her for months, all of them being messages of support and telling her how sorry she was for how she acted after Carver’s accident. She was disappointed Hawke wanted to stay at school for Christmas but if she wanted to fly home in January for a week Leandra would make it happen. (None of these texts are different from the original events. Hawke was just too wrecked with fear over dying thinking her mother hated her to read them.)
Mariko did beat Satsuki up for real. Tensions had been high as Mariko was taking Satsuki’s struggles with self esteem and its impact on those who were reassuring her throughout their stay very personally. Confronting her in the lounge, The Goofy Movie is playing in the background the entire time. Mariko gets frustrated and wants her to turn the damn thing off. Mariko said something about Satsuki’s dad being the reason she wanted to watch it and Satsuki made a comment about the concussion affecting her taste. Mariko then beat the shit out of Satsuki. Some people tried to stop it, other people got popcorn.
Kana and Satsuki confessed to each other after Satsuki stayed over one night to protect Kana from the Pepper Man. Rinne and Misty might have been present and things got real awkward afterwards.
Rinne noticed her thoughts about the situation becoming concerning and decided to put some distance between herself and the couple after doing some real soul searching. As a result she started actually making friends with her classmates. Also she got hit hard by the ergot/gas leak combo but it mostly just had her laying down on the tile of the (normal) pool.
Alena thought there were rats in the walls because of the ergot and suplexed the Christmas tree into the wall to try and scare them. Because she thought they would try and bully Chu-Chu for being a fancy rat.
Very shortly after Vanity’s kitchen chemical incident, she and Hawke busted out their fencing sabers and “trained” (see: stumbled their way around Rosenblum Hall and sometimes their swords hit each other) while sick with ergot poisoning. They ended up breaking a bust of Aloysius Monroe and freaked out, hiding the evidence in an air vent.
After her fight with Vanity, Chris wanted to prove herself to everyone so she hosted a party with cupcakes she made. Unfortunately they were made with more tainted flour so it just made everyone sicker. While trying to get more, Chris tripped on a garden hose from the maintenance shed Olivia and her sister were horsing around with and sprained her ankle. This put her on bed rest for a week. To keep her company, Rinne was “volunteered” to hang out with her. Despite this being involuntary at first, the two developed a legitimate connection, and the pair helped each other grow a bit. Towards the end of break, they shared a kiss, but they decided they both weren’t ready for a relationship and decided to simply remain friends.
Chris also encountered a remarkably tame but mischievous fox that seemed to know her, and vice versa. The creature bonded with her, and Chris and Vanity managed to make peace enough for Chris to receive papers recognizing “Jewel” as a Definitely Real Dog That Is Totally A Dog, Really. It is now her actual pet.
Lottie, like several other students, decided to pass the time getting really into the culinary arts. She got food poisoning after trying to make a steak that turned out just a little bit too rare, and wound up sleeping off most of the break and doodling in her room. Before getting sick, she did attend a really nice sleepover with the other girls, though.
At some point, Crystal, who was definitely never named Kristen, and never befriended Misty Quigley, wandered in from the storm. Then she went back home, to practice her soccer skills and for the next school play. Jann would also call Tiera, letting her know that her dad’s remains had finally been found. While it was hard to determine what exactly had happened, the best guess was that he’d had a heart attack out in the woods. It was sad, but at the same time she was relieved to finally have closure about that.
Before winter break ended, Usagi called everyone together and said that she’d be going back to Japan once winter break ended, but that she’d be around on Discord and video calls if anyone wanted to talk to her.
At the end of winter break, it would be announced that Burnbriar would be receiving two foreign exchange students…from Canada.

Her eyes sweep over all of you before landing on Sayo and Kanon.
And then, she places a paw on Olivia's hand, and the world goes white...
